Amsterdam was one of those places that had been on my wanderlust list for quite some time, mainly because I have never heard anyone say a bad word about it! Therefore, it was safe to say that when I felt it was time for a little city break, I couldn't wait to book an Airbnb, pack a carry on backpack and get to Gatwick airport.
Upon arrival, we abandoned our bags in our uber trendy apartment and headed out to explore the (very cold) streets of Amsterdam! As soon as we stepped out of the front door, we were hit with the city's iconic views; beautiful canals, rows of town houses and cyclists shooting past us. I fell in love with the bustling streets and picturesque architecture instantly and couldn't wait to jump on my own bike and discover more.
I noticed that whilst the narrow, cobbled streets were filled with cosy cafes and welcoming stores, the canals meant that there was much less traffic, pollution and let's face it - unnecessary stress! I loved how everywhere was buzzing with personality but remained light and airy.
We cycled up and down the streets, taking in as much as we could and chattering happily. I have to admit that I became very confused by all the bridges and every time I thought we were crossing a new one, it turned out we had been there at least twice before - I have an embarrassingly bad sense of direction.
My love for town houses was very much reinforced during our trip. The huge windows and high ceilings were just all too appealing to me!
We spent a lot of time in the Jordaan neighborhood. Myself and Miles always keep an eye out for where the locals spend there time and although it was right by the city centre, we found there were much fewer tourists around the area, which consisted of a maze of restaurants, cafes and shops. It was a much better place to wander around, without risking walking into someone or getting run over by a speedy cyclist!
If like us, you're planning to visit Amsterdam for just a few nights, I would definitely recommend paying the Rijksmuseum a visit. As you can see from the image above, it is just beautiful to look at but it's even more jaw-dropping inside. It happens to be right next to the Van Gogh museum too,
which features an extensive Rembrandt collection and you can stare in awe as you make your way around.
Both museums are also next to the famous photo-op slogan, I Amsterdam. I jumped at the opportunity and got "high on e" (sorry).

Much of our time in the city was spent taking in all of the beautiful views and architecture and cafe-hopping to get our next coffee and cake duo.
We also spent some time in the Red Light district which at night, was a huge tourist attraction. During the day, it had a pretty similar footfall to all the other areas within the city centre. If it wasn't for the red lights and neon signs everywhere, you could easily mistake it for a normal street. Aside from the gawking tourists, I really didn't feel uncomfortable being in the area and it's definitely an area to walk through and just see for your own eyes.
I'm really pleased to have ticked Amsterdam off my city break list. It is a truly unique place and I look forward to getting my fix of the town houses again some time soon!
Have you been to Amsterdam? What should I check out on my next visit!?
