Belgo

Tucked away in Nial's Yard in Covent Garden, is the restaurant Belgo. Famous for their kilo pots of moules and impressive list of beers, Belgo serves excellent quality Belgian food in an environment where hours could pass by without me even noticing. Today I visited for lunch but I have also been in the evening and the dark lighting makes you feel as though you are tucked away in some sort of underground cave and you are just left to eat, chat and relax.

Before I get onto the food, I must point out that if you are a lover of beer and you haven't been here, you must drop everything and go right now. Described as the restaurant for 'the curious beer drinker',  their menu boasts 65 different types of beer with the highest alcohol content being 12% - I haven't quite managed to try that one yet. In fact Belgo has the widest selection of beer in London and not only that but each beer has it's own unique glass. I looked up from my meal at one point to see a beer in a test tube type glass being served next to me. It's all very unique and interesting and I will have to try out a few next time I go.

The Mussles, or 'Moules' as they are called at Belgo are a must have for your first visit to the restaurant. The kilo pots come in sauces of your choice which include combinations of white wine, ginger, coconut, lemon grass, tomato and several more. They serve the moules in other forms but if it's your first visit, the kilo pots are the way to go.

The half spit roast chicken comes with your choice of spices or sauce; above is the apple sauce which I thought would be an interesting but good mix and it was. It comes with salad or Belgian fries and I of course had to go for the fries (I had tried them before and there was no way I was passing up the opportunity to enjoy them again).

I have only been to Belgo twice but I will be going many more times as there is so much I am yet to try. They serve everything from burgers and steak to duck and lobster and I will not rest until I have tried it all. If you are looking for somewhere to eat in Covent Garden or simply in central London, I would highly recommend Belgo.

Have you been? I would love to know what your favourite dishes are!
